Sergio Martinez will defend his world middleweight championship  tonight against Matthew Macklin at New York's Theater at Madison Square Garden. Today, the fighters weighed in.

Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KO) came in at 157½, with Macklin (28-3, 19 KO) at 158. That's about the norm for Martinez, who has weighed 158, 158, and 157¼ for his last three fights. Macklin, it's actually his lowest weight since his 2005 loss to Jamie Moore, which was a junior middleweight fight, but I don't think anyone's really worried about it.

Sergio Martinez vs Matthew Macklin: Pre-Fight Report Card

But for the judges, we might view this fight as the two best Middleweights in the world squaring off at the legendary Madison Square Garden.  Irish Matthew Macklin left his home in the U.K. to challenge German star Felix Sturm for the WBA 160 lb. belt in his last fight and looked to many observers to have deserved the decision. He didn’t get it and the fight was close enough to leave Macklin’s setbacks relevant enough to deny him the leading contender slot.  That’s all paper garbage.  On Saturday night, he is the leading contender because he will be the one in the ring.

Standing across from him will be a capital “C” Champion in the best sense of the word.  Martinez has been a formidable force since rising from Jr. Middleweight, thrashing Kelly Pavlik for the crown and adding knockout wins of world-class battlers Paul Williams and Sergiy Dzinziruk.  At 37, he appears to be in his prime. 29-year olds likely to have the crowd on their side on St. Paddy’s Day in New York City can age a man.  Let’s go to the report card.

Macklin has two big disadvantages in the ring on Saturday.  While his knockout record is decent, he’s not a big puncher and is the lesser of the two in that regard.  He’s also considerably slower than Martinez.  With a pressuring, volume punching style, he could be open to Martinez’s quick counters.

The chance for Martinez to look the part of surgeon exists.  Martinez doesn’t throw from the same fundamental base as Sturm, who was able to land his share of straight punches when he wasn’t ear muffing.  Martinez makes up for it with greater volume, a more offensive mindset, and all sort of wild, hard to see angles.

Where Macklin has a great chance is if he can get inside and stay there for healthy stretches.  Martinez isn’t easy to hit from the outside but he also isn’t unhittable.  If Macklin can stay close, he can force Martinez to take some off his fastball and deal with the stream of punches Macklin can let loose.  They don’t always land, but with the New York crowd looking to celebrate the Irish on Saturday, Macklin could steal rounds.

Both men have pretty good beards.  Macklin’s lone stoppage loss was in a war with Jamie Moore in 2006.  It took a lot to break him down.  Martinez hasn’t been stopped since 2000 and his lone loss since was hotly debated in the first Williams fight.  He’s been down twice, against Williams the first time and against Pavlik, but recovered easily and shown the ability to come on like the dickens.

Even in his last fight, a presumed walkover against Darren Barker where Martinez won in more human, if still easy, fashion than the higher spots of his run, Martinez showed he knew how to close when it was time.

The Pick

Macklin is going to make for a crowd-pleasing night but victory just seems out of reach. Martinez's speed is a big edge.  This could turn into a fairly one-sided affair by the fifth or so if Martinez doiesn't catch Macklin coming in early.  I think the Irishman stays up and gets beat up in the last few rounds en route to a stoppage around.

Middleweights, 12 Rounds (European Title)
Grzegorz Proksa (26-0, 19 KO) vs Kerry Hope (16-3, 1 KO)

To say that this isn't the best first defense of Proska's belt would be putting it very, very kindly. The 27-year-old Proksa, born in Poland but now living in and fighting out of England, decimated Sebastian Sylvester last October to win the vacant title, stopping the credible veteran after three rounds, when a battered and bloodied Sylvester could take no more.

He's an interesting fighter, still somewhere between prospect and contender in certain ways, such as his rather uneven record, which features a few solid wins, but also a lot of fights that were just plain too easy for where he should have been at in his career.

Greg Proksa will defend his European middleweight title against Kerry Hope on March 17 at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield. The unbeaten Redhill-based Pole will take on the Welshman as part of a top class undercard ahead of Kell Brook’s welterweight showdown with Matthew Hatton, defending his title for the first time since taking it from Sebastian Sylvester with a dominant performance in the German’s hometown, forcing Sylvester to quit on his stool after the third round. Hope enters the contest on the back of a fantastic victory on Sky Sports against hard-hitting Tony Hill in a British middleweight title eliminator in Bolton in October, the fourth win in a row after returning to action from 16 months out and teaming up with new trainer Karl Ince. Proksa’s defence is part of a fantastic undercard featuring Carl Frampton’s second Commonwealth super bantamweight title defence, former British welterweight champion Lee Purdy aims to get back on track against Nottingham’s Adnan Amar, Islington middleweight prospect John Ryder aims to take his unbeaten record into double figures against Huddersfield danger man Alistair Warren, who fought for the WBC Youth World title in 2010

This afternoon (American time) in Sheffield, Kell Brook and Matthew Hatton meet in a clash of top British welterweights, in a fight designed to send Brook to the next level. We'll have a bit more on the main event in just a bit, but let's take a look at the undercard, which features a couple of standout fighters on their way up in the sport. Have live round-by-round coverage of the full this afternoon, starting at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

Matthew Hatton has promised to show Kell Brook who’s the daddy – and repair boxing’s tarnished reputation. Tameside’s former European welterweight champion became a father for the second time in the early hours of Sunday morning when his partner Jenna Coyne gave birth to daughter Lola. Brook’s girlfriend Lindsey has also recently given birth to a baby girl called Nevaeh, meaning the fighters have more in common than their desire to win a world title.

When he was prepared to talk at all, which came at some personal risk to the interrogator, Hagler described it as taking himself to prison. He fed off the isolation, each day growing angrier until it manifested itself into one of those blood-boiling performances.

Daniel Geale is the latest in the line that began with Hagler. But yesterday, when most fighters would have been holed up in their hotel rooms pacing short angry steps, Geale left his hotel room and skipped across the road for a photo shoot with another Tasmanian boy, Ricky Ponting. (+) Watch Vitali Klitschko vs Dereck Chisora Live streaming in WBC Heavywieght Championship

 Feb 18, 2012 4:00 PM EST
Olympiahalle - Munich, Germany
Live Online TV

PREVIEW
Heavyweight champions Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KOs) and little brother Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KOs) have been ruling over the former glamour division of boxing collectively since October of 2008, when 'Dr. Iron Fist' came out of retirement to take the WBC title from Nigerian Samuel Peter. This Saturday night the talking will end and the fight can begin. Dereck Chisora faces the biggest challenge of his career as he looks to wrest away the WBC World Heavyweight Championship from Vitali and break the Klitschko brothers' stranglehold on the World belts. Vitali Klitschko of borther of Wladimir Klitschko will be taking on Great boxer Dereck Chisora in the 12 Rounds - Heavyweight Division (for WBC title) on 18th February 2012 at Olympiahalle Munich, Germany. Vitaly Klitschko is Two time champions will go into the fight as favourte and it will be interesting to see how this fight goes about.

Pre-fight analysis
Dereck "Del Boy" Chisora takes on Vitali "Dr. Ironfist" Klitschko for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship, live from the Olympiahalle, Munich on Saturday 18th February.  The Londoner is up for the challenge and if he fights like he did against European champion Robert Helenius when he was robbed of the title in 2011, then he's got a chance of pulling off an amazing win. Chisora is confident of causing an upset against reigning champ Klitschko, saying: "The Klitschko brothers have ruled for too long and it's now time to start smashing down the Iron Curtain of heavyweight boxing, starting with Vitali".

The Tension Grows in January
The big fight build-up began in earnest back in the second week of January when the two heavyweights met for a pre-fight press conference. Chisora attended the event in a canary yellow Reliant Robin; a tribute to his fighting nickname, "Del Boy", taken from the Only Fools and Horses character. "You can only punch something you can see, and you won't be seeing me. You're the Ironfist but I'm going to destroy you in your back yard. I am the black plague," said the Londoner, while also promising to win the fight with a knockout.

Continuing the tradition of having heavyweight battles not on Showtime or HBO, a series of three heavyweight title fights will be airing on Epix according to an official press release on Business Wire. The fights will start with Vitali Klitschko against Dereck Chisora on February 18th for the WBC title. This fight will probably be the best of the three fights with Del Boy looking very good in his last fight against Robert Helenius. Although Chisora did pick up the loss, many observers, myself included, thought that he deserved to win the fight.

The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall
Del Boy Chisora might be on foreign shores, but he will have the whole of Britain behind him as he looks to bring a Heavyweight World Championship home for the first time since Lennox Lewis was at his fighting best.
